Scientists Find That Night Owls Are Often Smarter Than Your Average Person

A person’s sleep cycle is something that is often unique to them, and you would be absolutely shocked at how different they can be. Most people do the standard 8-hour rest toward the end of the evening, anywhere from 10 p.m. to midnight, but there are those who stay up well into the early morning, going to bed around 4 a.m. or so.

My roommate in college split up his sleep into 4-hour intervals. He’d stay up super late (like 4 a.m.), sleep for four hours, go to class until about 2 p.m., come back and sleep for another four hours, and then do it all over again.

The New York Times even featured an article talking about how President Obama enjoys working into the early morning, snacking and watching sports as he tries to solve the problems of the world.

So, it might not come as a surprise that one study, published in Psychology Today, found that children who stayed up later are smarter. One other study also found that early risers might perform better in school, but it’s the night owls who were more successful at later stages in life.

The second study theorizes that:

“…intelligent children are more likely to grow up to be nocturnal because in ancestral times any activities at night would have been novel and would, therefore, have been more likely to attract people with inquisitive minds.”

If that weren’t enough, other articles note that frowned-upon behaviors like poor handwriting, using curse words, and being a messy person, are all indicative of high intelligence.

So, if any of this sounds like you, you have some ammunition for whenever people berate you for your seemingly “poor” habits!
